The metatarsals are a group of five long bones located in the midfoot region of the foot, extending from the tarsal bones (near the ankle) to the phalanges (toe bones). They form the framework of the forefoot and play a crucial role in weight-bearing, balance, and propulsion during walking and other weight-bearing activities. Each metatarsal bone is numbered from one to five, starting with the bone that connects to the big toe (first metatarsal) and ending with the bone that connects to the little toe (fifth metatarsal).
